Jerky and Hiking

As the weather gets warmer and warmer, many of you outdoorsy and adventurous types may already be planning a hiking, camping, or backpacking trip. Ah, the noble pursuit of nature lovers! Whether you’re a pro or you’re planning your first trip outside of camping in Mom and Dad’s backyard (or even if that’s your plan), we’ve got you covered.

All the required movement of these activities will make you hungry. Your body will be exerting much more energy than normal, especially if your usual routine doesn’t call for anything more than the trip from your front door to your car. Seriously though, most backpackers report eating 3,000-6,000 calories a day. That is compared to the average human caloric intake of around 1,500-2,000 a day. Depending on the circumstances, that means you could expect to eat more than twice as much as you normally do!

Where are you going get all those extra calories? Should you look for berries to eat? Mushrooms? Twigs? Squirrel hunting?

No you’re not going to do any of those things. That would be ridiculous. You should probably know where I’m going with this…
Jerky! You guessed it. Pat yourself on the back.

Beef Jerky is recommended by the USDA as an ideal hiking food—as it should be! It’s packed with protein, is non-perishable, and can be added to soups or noodles to create more substantial meals while cooking outdoors. It’s perfect.

Here are our top jerky picks for your next outdoor trip:
